Hunter Greene expects to return to the mound this week as the Cincinnati Reds will reportedly activate the right-handed pitcher in time for a Wednesday start.
Greene, who has been out since June 4 with a strained right groin, is in line to start against visiting Philadelphia.
The 26-year-old missed two weeks in May with a Grade 1 groin strain. After returning from the 15-day injured list, Greene made three starts but was pulled again on June 3 after feeling discomfort. He underwent an MRI shortly thereafter, followed by a second one a month later 'out of an abundance of caution,' according to Reds manager Terry Francona.
He has made three rehab starts for Triple-A Louisville, where he gave up 11 runs (nine earned) with 24 strikeouts across 11 innings. He also made a start for the Reds' Arizona Complex League team and tossed two scoreless innings.
Greene is 4-3 with a career-best 2.72 ERA in 11 starts this season, striking out 73 in 59 2/3 innings. The four-year pro owns a career record of 22-28 in 83 games, all starts, to go along with a 3.74 ERA and 558 strikeouts in 447 2/3 innings. He made the National League All-Star team in 2024.
His return comes at an opportune time for Cincinnati, which entered Sunday with a 61-57 record that places the Reds 2 1/2 games behind the New York Mets for the third National League wild-card spot.
