Canada's Mike Weir fired a 6-under 67 on Saturday to increase his lead to two shots after the second round of the PGA Tour Champions Cologuard Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
In a scoring oddity, Weir did not card a single par over his closing nine holes at Omni Tucson National, carding seven birdies and two bogeys - including one at the par-4 18th, which put him at 13-under 133 and two strokes ahead of Kevin Sutherland.
Sutherland carded a bogey-free 67 that featured four birdies and an eagle at the par-5 17th.
Scott Parel (67) stands third at 10-under and Scott Verplank (70) stands fourth at 9-under. Rounding out the leaderboard in a tie for fifth at 8-under are Jeff Maggert (66), Tim Petrovic (67) and David Toms (69). Maggert's 66 was low round of the day.
Phil Michelson, looking to become the first Champions player to win his first three starts, followed up his first-round 70 with a lackluster 72 that included four birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-5 second hole. He stands T-22 at 4-under.
Defending champion and Charles Schwab Cup standings leader Bernhard Langer improved on his opening-round 71 with a 69 on Saturday and stands T-11 at 6-under. The 63-year-old Langer, winner of 41 Champions titles, has not won since his victory in Tucson last March.
Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz, making his third Champions start, rebounded from a first-round 77 to shoot even-par 73 and stands T-61 at 4-over.
